As 1 in 5 Children Go To Bed Hungry, We’re Doing Something About It!

It’s estimated nearly 16 million children are facing hunger in America, which equates to 1 in 5 children going to bed hungry each night. Without proper nutrition, many of those children will face a lifetime of physical and mental hardships.

PHYSICAL

Malnutrition impacts a child’s immune system. When the immune system is weakened, their ability to fight off viruses and diseases are too.

A malnourished child is more susceptible to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and a number of other infectious viruses. Infections and viruses which not only deplete necessary nutrients, but also inflict long-term physical effects, some of which can become fatal.

MENTAL

Studies and research have determined malnourished children have greater chances of intellectual struggles including:

  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Impaired school performance
  • Decreased IQ scores
  • Memory deficiency
  • Learning disabilities
  • Reduced social skills
  • Reduced language development
  • Reduced problem-solving skills

FINANCIAL COST

When a child is ill – in most cases – a parent stays home, potentially losing a day’s pay.

In addition to lost wages, there are healthcare costs. Even with the passing of the Affordable Healthcare Act, there are still costs associated to getting decent medical treatment, not to mention time spent in the doctor’s office and cost of gas used to get to and from the clinic.

HOW CARING HANDS HELPS

Since 2003, Caring Hands Outreach Center has providing economically burdened residents within the Southeast Polk area with the food and clothing they need to survive.

We’re dedicated to helping both children and adults receive the food they need to remain physically and mentally healthy.

We’ve been blessed with donations from numerous churches, local businesses, and individual community members; each playing a significant role in helping keep our pantry and clothing hanger stocked.
